Facebook has added a new name on its list of acquisitions made in 2016. This time, the social media giant has acquired the popular face-swapping app dubbed MSQRD.
MSQRD offers a variety of face-changing features in addition to selfie lenses, such as adding live video effects to your selfies and add facial overlays which make you look like celebs dubbed celebrity masks.
MSQRD is developed by Masquerade, a Belarusian startup.
The news was out by Masquerade itself via its official blog and was later confirmed by FB. The acquisition amount hasn’t been disclosed yet but is suspected to be fairly big owing to the face-swapping app’s reputation.
Before the acquisition, MSQRD operated as a standalone app for Android and iOS platforms. Even after the acquisition, the face-swapping app will continue to operate as a standalone app.
Both companies confirmed that the app will continue to operate as a standalone app for Android and iOS.
Regarding the acquisition, a Facebook spokesperson stated,
“Masquerade has built a fantastic app, MSQRD, with world-class imaging technology for video. We’re excited to welcome Masquerade to our team and continue enhancing Facebook video experience.”
While FB warmly welcomed the app to its brigade, Masquerade stated that they were very excited to join Facebook and provide their services to social media’s 1.6 bn users.
MSQRD app is capable to add effects to video in realtime. Moreover, MSQRD’s developer Masquerade offers interested designers aid in creating their own filters as well as masks. The firm also helps designers to even sell their created filters and masks on its MSQRD store.
Of late, Facebook has been acquiring image and video tools. Maybe, the company is in a move to enhance the image and video quality and features offered to its users. Acquisition of MSQRD probably suggests that we can sometime soon see the app’s features integrated into FB’s products as well as in its main service too.
